2 years ago you were just a teeny tiny baby that i got to see for only a few seconds before the doctors whisked you away for observation.  now you're a bona fide toddler with energy to rival all the energizer bunnies in the world!  thank you for bringing so much love and joy to our hearts.

happy 2nd birthday raoul!!!

to my sister from another mother, birthday wishes and prayers from my heart to yours!  i couldn't decide which card suits you best, so i made two! =)  you are such a wonderful friend chelo, with a warm heart, a beautiful soul, oodles of talent, a fantastic singing voice to rival the best of them, oh, and a fabulous taste in shoes! hahahha! what more can i say?

you seem to have the best of everything, and you certainly deserve that and more.i wish you all things blissful and wonderful today, and always.  sending you warm hugs all the way from singapore (and wishing i could be there in person to give them).  love, patricia

it all started with a conversation i had with my sister maia several days ago.  we were talking about terry pratchett and how reading his books always makes us happy.  but maia went on to defend pathos in books and said that a good cry is always therapeutic, so she likes to read them once in a while.  i disagreed, but for very personal reasons.  growing up, i was such a drama queen that by the time i was 20 i already cried enough for 5 lifetimes!  it seemed like i was crying every 4 minutes, to tell you the truth.

fast forward to today, when i only ever read books that are well-written, gripping,  intelligently funny, and challenges the imagination.  to make it short, nicholas sparks and i are not friends. =)  i find no need for a good cry.  my world is already insane enough without my adding tears to it.  besides, my boys (all 3 of them) panic when they see me crying! hahahahahah!

ever since i became a mother, i felt the responsibility to stay (relatively) sane. if not for my sake, then for the sake of my sons.  i have no time for drama, no time for pathos.  there's already too much of it in the news, why will i look for it in fiction!?  besides, i know that there are a lot more important things than my own feelings --  (i actually had to learn that, believe it or not)  there's duty, and responsibility, and a lot of nurturing on top of all the little mundane tasks of the day.

so i'm done with the drama (thankfully), the soul-searching, the angst.  i'd really rather stay cheerfully insane (a few sandwiches short of a picnic), just the way i am now.   i'm a drama queen turned dairy queen.  =)

you've outgrown them. in more ways than one.

after this month you'll be needing "real" shoes that will help you as you take your first steps on your own.  it's a bittersweet realization, but that's what every milestone feels like.

bye bye baby shoes!

it is easy to dismiss terry pratchett as just another fantasy author.  (after all, what else can he be if he writes about a world that travels through space on the backs of four elephants that stand on the back of a giant turtle?)  this guy is a bloody genius, that's what he is. he is a master storyteller, with an intensely creative imagination (where does this guy get his ideas? i want to drink whatever he's drinking!), and magical way with words.

he is regarded as one of the most significant contemporary english-language satirists, pratchett has won numerous literary awards, was named an officer of the british empire “for services to literature” in 1998, and has received four honorary doctorates. his acclaimed novels have sold more than 45 million copies (give or take a few) and have been translated into 33 languages.  only j.k. rowling has outsold him, but pratchett still holds the record for being the most shoplifted author in the u.k.

his books are funny, they make you laugh out loud.  everytime i read one, i start to question why i bother reading other books at all! (ok, well, there's no blood and gore in his books so maybe that's why.)  and i annoy everyone around me by quoting entire passages to them. hehehehe (in other words if you see me holding a pratchett book, run for your life!)  but what i really like most about them is that i actually learn so much!  more than just fantasy books, they are actually satires about real world issues like politics, religion, economics, war, and everything in between.  why, i even learned everything about banking systems in the novel "making money" that my professor of economics at UP failed to make me understand! seriously.

but most of all, he uses words like he loves them.  he's brilliant writer and i wish he could keep writing. sadly, he has been diagnosed with early-onset alzheimer's disease.  which is only the worst thing that can happen to a mind like his.  already i am mourning the fact that there will only be 38 discworld novels.  (oh, did i mention he's also very prolific?)

these are my favorite titles in no particular order (out of all that i have read):
1. night watch (about politics, social justice, rule of law)
2. thud (about prejudice, and doing what's right)
3. wytches abroad (a parody of all fairy tales)
4. the light fantastic
5. the amazing maurice and his educated rodents (a must-read)
6. thief of time
7. hogfather (this was made into a movie. saw the film. loved it too. it's the best argument for letting kids believe in fantasies like santa claus and the tooth fairy.)

some of the characters appear in more than one book, and i have also come to love them like they were my friends.  =)

*** that shelf full of discworld novels is sadly, not mine. one day, i'll own them all.

living in a home where i'm the only female makes it very challenging for me to add some "girly" touches to the decor.  for example, there is a vase of silk flowers in the living room. they're actually really nice artsy ones except that more often than not, there's bound to be a plane, a rocket, or a bat on top of it.

last weekend i bought myself an earring organizer. you know, one of those pretty wired things where you can hang your favorite earrings.  the one i got looks like an ornate bench, and i fell in love with it so much! i placed it on my bedside table.
except now, it looks like this:

the boys placed that in front of the bench to "guard" my jewelry daw.

why do i even bother, huh? it's a losing battle, i tell ya. =)

thank you ayen

thank you tita ayen for the super cute onesie!

look, i'm wearing it now!
